"You have a sword," is all he gives for reasoning. There are other things about Sabriel which let him make an educated guess, but the sword is perhaps one of the defining attributes of someone who is prepared to fight, he thinks.

"I hunt vampires," he adds, almost like an afterthought.

Which is kind of hilarious to think about considering what he just said about being half of one.
